I Don't Think My Dog Can Be Trained?

ANSWER.  All dogs can learn and be trained. Dogs do not think or have the ability to reason like humans do. While they respond to us, they are not responding to verbal communication. They are actually responding to sound and tone of voice. This is known as simple association.

Successful dog training is about creating positive associations to positive behaviors and negative associations to negative behaviors. This means you need to have a strategy for positively reinforcing good behaviors during any kind of training. Your strategy can be as simple as words of encouragement, affectionate touching, or even treats or giving a favorite toy as a reward. Anytime your dog does something you like, you must give instant positive reinforcement. The quicker and more consistently you reinforce the good behavior, the more often you will get that behavior.

You also need to develop a strategy to punish bad behavior. Usually, a simple “No!” and a cross look will be good enough. Additionally, you might use a gentle tug on their collar to show them that you do not approve of that behavior. But remember, slapping, hitting, or any physical correction can do more harm than good.
