Will A Dog Become Dominate If Let it Sleep With Me?

QUESTION: I keep hearing people warning me that it is a very bad idea to have my dog sleep in my bed because she won't recognize me as the "alpha" or master. I crated her next to my bed until she was housebroken and she has been sleeping on my bed now for two months. I have noticed absolutely no changes, other than a very content puppy!

What do you guys think?

ANSWER.
We have always allowed it, but on the human's terms. We get in bed first, (pick our spot), before we allow them up. If we tell them to give us space, they do it with no problem.

To me, training (setting rules and boundaries) is not about "alpha" or "packleader" as some here have called it. It is simply a matter of developing a strong bond and a mutual trust and respect. My dogs have always been my friends first, then I showed them what I needed them to do to make me happy. They quickly realize that when I'm happy they get the rewards they want!

If allowing a dog to sleep with you threatens your leadership role, you really need to rethink your relationship with your dog. If you have a proper "bond" with your dog, and you share trust and respect, you will NEVER have leadership issues (behavior problems) in the first place.
